Luang Prabang: Muonglao Guesthouse

When we initially arrived in Luang Prabang, we didn’t have any prearranged accommodation. That was perhaps a mistake as we ended up walking up and down the streets looking for a room. Anything. We ended up finding a place called Muonglao Guesthouse a bit off the main strip on the opposite site of Mount Phousi and away from the water. At $22 a night for a private double room, it was competitively priced and included breakfast as well as wifi (which wasn’t very reliable in the end).

The room itself was very large and overall quite clean. We stayed on the second floor and had a balcony shared with the other rooms which looked out onto the street. The breakfast was good. Around the hotel were a few restaurants although not nearly as many options as there are on the main strip. Getting into town was a 3 minute walk (we are talking about Luang Prabang after all) so that wasn’t an issue.

The staff at the hotel were nice but nothing special as was the restaurant. We ended up drinking more than eating there to be honest and instead had food at the night market pretty much all the time.

Overall, I think the price was fair and I’d recommend it based on that alone to be honest and also because the rooms were so large. But if you want to be closer to the action, you probably won’t go this far off the main strip.
