When we arrived in Melbourne, we really had a tough time finding a place to stay. Our first problem was that we arrived a little before midnight. Our second problem was that Melbourne was packed with end of summer backpackers. The place was full. We got lucky on our first night and got a 4 person room at the Nunnery and paid about $38 a person.
The Nunnery is exactly as it sounds; a former nunnery turned backpacker hostel. It is an incredible building and has fun little signs of threatening nuns reminding you to wash your dishes and so forth. There are two sides to The Nunnery; the main building and the garden house next door. The garden house is much nicer and has the smaller occupancy rooms. If you want a quieter night, ask to stay there.
We also stayed in a couple of other rooms (we bounced around a lot due to high occupancy rates). We stayed in a six person room for about $34 a night and a massive 12 person dorm for about $31 a night. Honestly, if you stay in a 12 person dorm, you really should expect a party scene which is what you will get. Irrelevant note: it was my 34th birthday the night we moved into the 12 person dorm. Fond memories.
The nunnery does have a usual bbq night full of free food and also a free sunday breakfast. Both are great ways to meet new people who were really friendly and fun when we were there. The Nunnery is located in the Fitzroy and close to some great coffee shops. We did a daily coffee shop each morning and really enjoyed walking around the neighbourhood.
The price for the rooms is competitive. It included breakfast but no Wifi which is par for the course. The bathrooms were sufficient and clean. We honestly didn’t get much sleep while we were in the 12 person dorm for obvious reasons but if you want to meet people and have some fun, it’s a good option.
The kitchen was always cramped despite being quite large but rarely is any hostel kitchen not cramped. If I were to visit Melbourne again, the competitive pricing and great location would be hard to beat but I probably wouldn’t take the 12 person dorm again. I might just be getting a bit too old for that room. I’d probably end up back here or just down the street at Home @ The Mansion. Both are recommended and were good fun.
Tips:
- If looking for privacy, ask to be in the garden house instead of the main building.
- Explore the area for great coffee shops while you are there.
