On the loneliness of travel

I recently watched the beautiful work of Commander Hadfield singing the legendary David Bowie song, “Space Oddity”. It was an appropriate send off piece for Hadfield who has been stationed above earth for the past few months as commander of the international space station. The piece is beautiful. Hadfield takes advantage of his unique position and does a great job of shooting himself in his surroundings. The lyrics fit wonderfully with the music. When I watched it, I felt an stronger emotional reaction to the song than I...

Want Less, Get More

If you set out on a “around the world” trip, you’ll come across a million blogs that will list out their suggested packing list. We’re no different here of course. No matter what you pack, you’ll adjust on the road. But road life has a way of forcing you into the embrace of minimalism and simplicity. Carry everything you own on your back most days and you’ll quickly learn what you need and what you don’t. ...

Stop Fitting In

Stop Fitting In

It goes without saying that there are a number of reasons people don’t take trips around the world for extended lengths of time. Most people imagine money as being a big reason and to be sure, that’s one of them (although you don’t need anything like the amount of money that you imagine! Just see our budget section for an idea of costs). But another reason I believe people don’t pursue this goal is that to do so would, in no small way, make them different. And in general, people don’t like to be...

This is My Canada

We were recently tagged by Always Trekking (no relation ) to write a post entitled “This is My Canada”. Apparently, this post by Spunky Girl Monologue got the whole thing rolling. It seemed like a good idea so we’re going to tell the world, what it is that we love about Our Canada. Here are three reasons why I love My Canada: 1. Canada is...

The Single Most Important Lesson I Learned From Traveling The World

The Single Most Important Lesson I Learned From Traveling The World

After traveling the world for 13 months, I’m often asked the same old question: “What was your favorite part?”. This question is logical but also often loaded. Most people I speak with aren’t actually interested in the answer. They are usually interested in seeing if one of my highlights matches up with their near term travel plans. So, when someone asks me “What was your favorite part?”, I have three possible answers which I call, “The Good, the Bad and The Ugly”. The...

You Will Die

You Will Die

You will die. The short little sentence is a powerful reminder of a truth we all are aware of but constantly forget while focused more on the urgency of the unimportant. Keeping that thought in mind is a great way to give perspective to your everyday chores and can help you focus on the more meaningful aspects of your life. Recently, this concept struck me in two different ways: an online article in the New York Times entitles You Are Going To Die which is an honest piece about caring for elder parents; and an interview on the CBC show...

Don’t Panic

Don’t Panic

There’s a lot of travel advice on the internet. I usually refrain from dishing out my own since the world is full of it and what little advice I have often imagined giving usually ends up being wrong. But one piece that seems to always hold true – probably because I was not nearly clever enough to invent it – is this: Don’t...

The South American Weightloss Plan

A funny thing happened to us in South America that hasn’t happened pretty much anywhere else we have been. We lost weight. A bunch of weight. To be completely honest, I don’t know how much weight yet since we have not weighed ourselves but we have both noticed a significant amount of weight being shed. I wouldn’t be surprised if I have lost 10 pounds over the past couple of months.  Maybe...

What are you optimistic about?

What are you optimistic about?

What are you optimistic about? This question was posed by the editor of Edge.com to a number of leading scientists and academics (the main profile of authors for the site). The resulting book is an interesting read with an admittedly intensely scientific skew. What made me most interested in the book however is the question itself. What a fantastic question. Consider it for a minute. First, in answering the question, you are immediately revealing a great deal about yourself. Optimistic about world peace? Then you must believe we are...

Time Battles Money!

Time Battles Money!

And so with all our best intentions, two days after arriving in Quito, Ecuador, sitting outside the Galapagos Islands Travel Operator, we negotiated our first major travel decision, and changed the course of our trip together. Sue and Pete had a budget that we’d all agreed to. And I had a clock that had started ticking down. Rodrigo, our tour operator, had placed in front of us a deck of multiple last minute Galapagos tours. We now needed to find a “once in a lifetime” experience amongst the cards we were...
